The annual early-September hike sponsored by the Wellfleet Conservation Trust took nearly one hundred people down sandy lanes, through marshes and out to the beach at Lieutenant's Island in South Wellfleet - all carefully timed so that we wouldn't be trapped by the twice-daily, high-tide flooding of the only access road. Out toward the far end of our hike, we stopped for historic presentations alongside this classic boat house, with the waters of Wellfleet Harbor behind us and the tall dunes of the National Seashore's Great Island rising in the distance.
